The saying goes, “Don’t mess with a winning formula”. However, the De Voetpadkloof Resort has proved that even if you are on top of your game, you can always go higher.
For many years now, the resort in Mpumalanga has been a favourite with campers; no matter what time of the year you drop by, you can be sure all the customers will be happy and satisfied. And you can expect even bigger smiles from visitors after the recent upgrades at the resort.
De Voetpadkloof has built a large, heated, indoor swimming pool and a new bar, has upgraded the tea garden, and has also expanded the well-stocked convenience store (licensed).
This 600-hectare nature reserve in the Loskop Valley, just 35km north of Middelburg, has all the amenities you need for an enjoyable stay. There’s a choice of accommodation that will suit any holiday-maker’s lifestyle − camping and caravanning stands, log cabins, chalets, and even mountain and safari tents.
Accommodation
The resort has a total of 46 stands, all with power points, a water tap nearby, and braai facilities. Although most of the stands are grassed, you have to remember that you are still in the bushveld – De Voetpadkloof has added paved areas on the side of the stands to help control the dust.
There are three ablution blocks spread throughout the camp, and these were upgraded just a few years ago. The ablutions have cold and hot water, and dishwashing facilities. The previous upgrade also added a laundry area with a washing machine and tumble dryer.
For the nature lovers, there is a bush camp with 20 sites, but the road to get there is sandy and not suitable for heavy caravans and motorhomes. The bush camp does not have electricity.
And, if you are not into camping or caravanning, De Voetpadkloof offers over 130 beds in total − in their 10 log cabins, 11 chalets, 6 mountain tents and 17 ensuite safari tents.

What to do
Besides the new, heated indoor pool, there are two outside pools (one heated, one cold). As if this weren’t enough to satisfy your need for splashing about on a hot day, there is also a natural rock pool in the nearby stream which you can reach easily in a short walk from the dam.
The dam is a big attraction for bird lovers. Take your binoculars and spend some time under the thatched lapa built on stilts over the water, and see how many of the more than a hundred bird species that have been recorded at De Voetpadkloof you can spot. If you’re a fisherman, you can fish for Carp, Kurper and Bass in the dam on a catch-andrelease basis.
Even if swimming, birding or fishing isn’t to your liking, there’s more entertainment and activities back at the resort. The games room has table tennis, darts, a pool table, and flat-screen TVs with DStv. Outside, you can enjoy a game of putt-putt on the course in the gardens.
If you feel like a light meal and something to drink, but you’re not in the mood to prepare anything yourself, go relax in the tea garden.
For the more energetic, there are well-marked hiking trails. All the trails are day walks and can be completed on your own. You will see a fair amount of wildlife as well a large variety of birds which roam the resort.
As it is a nature reserve, De Voetpadkloof is packed with wildlife like brown hyena, caracal, jackal, gemsbok and giraffe. You can go on guided game drives, or rent a quad bike for a more adventurous trip.
So, if you are looking for a bushveld getaway with all the bells and whistles, you can’t ask for anything more… and it’s less than three hours’ drive from Johannesburg!
