Shumba Valley Guest Farm

Review by Kobus Botha

Shumba Valley is located near Fouriesburg in the Brandwater Basin in the exquisite Eastern Free State highlands, with incredible Maluti Mountain views.

Shumba is a paradise for 4x4ers, mountain bikers, off-road bikers, hikers, walkers and horse riders. It’s also a perfect place for birdwatchers, photographers and artists because the surrounds are so beautiful and peaceful. The Shumba Valley Guest Farm and camping site looks across the valley of the Brandwater Basin, which is often filled with the horses from surrounding farms, and into the Maluti Mountains. It offers an idyllic setting for anyone who wants to get away from it all, to breathe in the fresh mountain air and drink the crystal-clear spring water!

It’s a place to regain your energy by enjoying the stunning walks and the sight of birds flashing across the sky or lingering among the local fauna. The campsite has all the facilities you need on a camping trip. You can pay by card, and there’s actually tourism information available on site, which not many resorts have. Braai facilities and a bar are available, and you can also buy your firewood at the campsite. More than half of the caravan and tent stands have power points, grass and shade, and there are taps close to the sites, plus communal ablution blocks with baths.

Don’t count on taking your pet along, although if you discuss this beforehand with the resort management, you might get special pet permission. Shumba Valley has chalets, rooms and cottages for non-campers.
