Motorhome Review: Maui Iveco M4BI

Driving a vehicle this big for the first time is daunting; and before I had even put it into first, I was wondering how I was going to manage reversing if we were to stop at small campsites… or, even more stressful, having to do U-turns. But after an introduction and explanation by the friendly people at Maui Motorhome Rental on how everything works, I hit the road, and soon realised that the task was not going to be as hard as I had thought.

The six-speed manual gearbox responds fast, even for a diesel. And the power is impressive, especially taking into account the amount of weight that is put onto this Iveco chassis. This is a four-berth motorhome, consisting of two double beds, two dinette areas, a kitchenette and a bathroom.

The 2.2L turbo diesel engine is ideal for long-distance trips on which you would like to cruise along at a comfortable speed, but still have enough power to pass obstacles and other cars if necessary. Hills are easily conquered, and gravel roads are no big deal.

If you’re driving in the summer, there’s an aircon to cool down the cabin and living area. And, if it rains, you stay inside and cook your dinner on the double-hob gas stove.

The fully-automatic geyser can be operated by gas or 220V, and ensures that there is hot and cold water in both shower and kitchen basin, thanks to an 80L water tank.
