Tucked away on the tranquil banks of the Mtentweni Lagoon, Umtentweni Caravan Resort is one of those special places that keeps families coming back year after year — and for good reason. Small, quiet, and impeccably maintained, this Hibiscus Coast gem has earned its place among South Africa’s top resorts through a decade of consecutive reader-voted recognition. It’s the kind of park where high standards meet genuine warmth, and where the lagoon, the sea breeze, and the sound of happy kids set the tone from the moment you arrive.

Camping & Caravanning at Umtentweni

With 36 stands set against the backdrop of the Mtentweni Lagoon, the campsite at Umtentweni has a relaxed, intimate atmosphere that larger resorts simply can’t replicate. Every stand is connected to 220V mains power, and water points are conveniently close to sites, making setup a breeze whether you’re rolling in with a caravan, pitching a tent, or parking the motorhome.

The resort welcomes caravans, motorhomes, and tents alike, so whatever your setup, you’ll find a comfortable spot to call home for a few days — or longer. A large, open grassed area along the lagoon’s edge gives campers plenty of room to breathe, relax, and let the kids run free.

Ablution facilities are well-maintained with hot and cold water, and the park also offers a scullery and laundry facilities for longer stays. The resort is security fenced or patrolled, so you can settle in and unwind with peace of mind.

Good news for those who can’t leave the four-legged family member behind — small dogs are welcome by prior arrangement with the resort manager (in season).

Facilities & Activities

There’s no shortage of things to do at Umtentweni, and that’s part of its enduring charm. The lagoon itself is the star of the show — grab a canoe and paddle out onto the still water, try your hand at windsurfing, or cast a line for an afternoon of fishing in either the lagoon or the sea. A shark-protected beach lies just a leisurely 600-metre stroll away, making it easy to combine a lagoon morning with a sea swim in the afternoon.

Back at the resort, a swimming pool and children’s play park keep younger guests thoroughly entertained, while the trampoline tends to attract both the little ones and the young at heart. The large grassed area on the lagoon bank is perfect for a spontaneous game of volleyball or a kicking-around session before sunset.

When the sun dips, the socialising begins. The communal braai area is where new friendships are made and old ones are toasted — grab your catch of the day and fire it up alongside fellow campers. For something a little more civilised, head to Sharks Cove, the resort’s thatched pub perched right on the riverbank. It’s the ideal spot for a sundowner and a friendly chat while the water glimmers beside you.

The games room has something for everyone — pool table, table tennis, darts, and more — while the TV room with DStv is on hand for those evenings when you just want to kick back. Organised events run in season, adding a communal energy to the park that makes it feel like more than just a stopover.

Braai facilities are available throughout the resort, and the park’s easy access to nearby amenities — a service station, shops, restaurants, and pubs virtually on the doorstep — means you’re never far from what you need.

Beyond the Resort

The surrounding area is packed with day-trip potential. Oribi Gorge, the Crocodile Farm, and the Wild Coast Casino are all within easy reach. The towns of Port Shepstone, Shelly Beach, and Margate offer restaurants, sports bars, golf courses, and shopping. There’s even a popular Friday night moonlight flea market just across the river, along with putt-putt and a foofie slide nearby — perfect for a family outing mid-stay.

Other Accommodation

Not travelling with a tent or caravan? Umtentweni has you covered with a selection of self-catering chalets and resort caravans, all maintained to the same high standards the park is known for. All units are serviced and cleaned before occupation, and the resort’s dedication to cleanliness and comfort is evident throughout. Note that no animals are permitted in the chalets, and check-out is by 10am unless prior arrangements have been made. Payment is accepted by cash or EFT — credit cards are not accepted at this resort.
