Each site is equipped with electricity points, water points, and braai stands, giving you everything you need to settle in comfortably. The ablution block is well maintained, keeping standards high even in this wonderfully off-the-beaten-track setting.
The forest canopy provides natural shade and shelter, and the atmosphere throughout the camp is quiet and unhurried — this is very much a place to unplug, slow down, and let the sounds of the bush take over. Duikers have been known to wander through the camp in the mornings, and the owls make their presence heard after dark, adding to the sense that the forest is very much alive around you.
An outdoor swimming pool is available on site for a refreshing dip after a day on the trails, and braai areas are set up for those long, unhurried evenings under the stars. The Mac Mac team are genuinely knowledgeable about the surrounding area and are happy to point you toward the best trails, waterfalls, and local gems.
Facilities & Activities
The centrepiece of the local area is Mac Mac Falls itself — a dramatic pair of cascades dropping 70 metres through lush greenery into a gorge below, where natural pools form at the base for swimming and sunbathing. The falls are just 1.5 km from the resort, making them an easy and spectacular first stop on any morning.
Beyond the falls, the Panorama Route opens up in every direction. God’s Window and Mount Sheba Nature Reserve are within 25 minutes, offering some of the most breathtaking viewpoints on the escarpment. For those with bigger ambitions, the Kruger National Park’s Phabeni Gate is roughly an hour’s drive away — making Mac Mac an excellent base for a Big Five day trip without the full game reserve price tag.
The area is also well served by hiking trails, with forest paths winding through the plantation and connecting to broader escarpment routes. It’s the kind of destination that rewards those who stay a few nights — there’s always another waterfall to find, another viewpoint to reach, another stretch of forest road to explore.
Safari Tent Accommodation
Not everyone in the group needs to bring their own shelter — Mac Mac’s five safari tents offer a comfortable and well-equipped alternative for those who want to experience the forest without the full camping setup. Each tent sleeps up to five (four beds plus a sleeper couch) and comes fully equipped with its own shower, toilet, and basin, a fridge, two-plate stove, microwave, and kettle, and a full set of crockery and cutlery.
The safari tents share the same forest setting and access to the pool and braai areas as the campsite, so mixed groups — some camping, some in tents — can easily stay together and enjoy the retreat as one. It’s a great option for families with younger children or for those who want the outdoors experience with a little more comfort at the end of the day.
