Nestled at the heart of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Glen Reenen Rest Camp offers a serene escape in one of South Africa’s most dramatic landscapes. Located in the Free State, near the border of Lesotho, the park is renowned for its towering golden sandstone cliffs, rolling hills, and a diverse array of flora and fauna.
The campsite – operating under SANParks regulations – is situated at the base of the park’s iconic sandstone formations, with views of Brandwag Buttress to the left and Mushroom Rock to the right.
Glen Reenen Rest Camp is an idyllic setting for nature lovers and adventurers, surrounded by rugged cliffs and vast open skies that light up with stars after sunset.

The camp has approximately 60 grassed sites, some with paved sections for added convenience. Shaded by indigenous trees, many stands offer relief from the sun, making them ideal for campers during warmer months.
Booking online or at the office allows guests to choose between sites with or without electricity (with a slight difference in cost). But it seems that park management are not aware of this, because they will just tell you to select any spot. Arriving early is recommended during peak times.
Visitors are required to check in at the SANPArks office accross the road before you enter the campsite. There is also a small shop, fuel station, and the self-catering accommodation (rondavels, longdavels, and family cottages).

The communal ablution facilities are well-maintained, with two blocks featuring toilets, showers, and basins.
For added convenience, there are designated scullery areas with basins for washing up, as well as two-burner gas stoves for communal use.
The ablutions and scullery facilities are regularly cleaned, ensuring a pleasant experience for all visitors.
Most of the campsites along the river have cement braais, but you might have to share with your neighbour. Sites on the road side of the camp have steel braai facilities.

While camping at Glen Reenen is a back-to-nature experience, it doesn’t lack essential comforts. A small shop and fuel station are located just across the road from the campsite, making it easy to stock up on basic supplies. Guests are also welcomed to explore the nearby SANParks self-catering accommodations, including rondavels and family cottages.
Glen Reenen Rest Camp is the perfect base for exploring the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Several hiking trails start nearby, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging routes. Trails like the Brandwag Buttress hike or the Mushroom Rock trail offer spectacular views of the park’s striking landscapes.

Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in spotting eland, zebra, and other game species, while birdwatchers can keep an eye out for over 100 bird species found in the park.
