The Badger Extreme – built tough, tows like a dream

The Badger Extreme has had a few tough off-road tests recently and fared extremely well – these caravans are robust and are built tough!

The caravans tow like a dream and track beautifully behind the tow vehicle. One could easily forget that there is anything in tow at all!

Putting the caravan through its paces on a trip to Santa Maria, some of the 68km through the Maputo Elephant Reserve were nail-biting, to say the least. This is serious 4×4 territory, the thick sand and moguls make it slow going, and the Badger got through without a hitch.

Another road test for the Extreme was a trip through Botswana to Zambia. The 137km from Kazangula to Sesheke was tough – literally driving off the road more than on. The AL-KO Enduro Independent suspension, which is standard on the Extreme took, this in its stride.

Construction
With the benefits of strength, durability, and excellent insulation properties, fibreglass was the preferred material when developing the Badger. All of the Badger models come from the same mold, so their footprints are identical. The differences in models come with suspensions, fixtures and finishes.

Chassis
All of the Badger Chassis are hot dipped galvanised and all trailers are braked. The Extreme comes standard with the AL-KO Enduro Suspension and the X-Over with the Burqup Rubberide.
All models have rear support corner steadies and a lockable spare wheel.

Set-Up
Once you have set the Badger up a few times and know the steps, it is quick and easy. As soon as the bed has been opened up one can truly appreciate the design that has gone into this caravan – the interior space is massively increased when set up. Once the optional awning, side wall/s, Add-a-Room, and Shower Unit are set up the living area is huge!

Interior
With all the comfort features on offer, one can camp in style, with the shower/toilet cubicle being a welcome addition to the caravan.

The king-size bed and the padded headboard are luxurious and the reading lights on each side are convenient and functional.

There is a 220v plug point between the two headboards for charging phones, laptops and the like. An optional fold-down table is great for working/eating and many of the Badger caravans have been fitted with air conditioning and TVs.

Kitchen Area
The Badger team worked hard to customise their kitchen areas to their clients’ individual requirements, with a variety of layouts being offered. The caravan comes standard with a two-plate gas stove situated in a drawer below the kitchen area. Other options include the Snappy Chef Induction Stove or the Snappy Chef Double 2 Burner Gas Stove. A lot of their clients are now also adding Air Fryers, which they integrate onto a pull-out shelf for maximum ventilation.

So whether you prefer shelving or drawers there are plenty of options. Additional storage can be added to the main door, which is a good utilisation of what would otherwise be dead space.

The wash-up station is situated behind the slide-out fridge, sharing the hot and cold water shower with the shower unit. Water is drawn from the 110-litre water tank which is heated by a Hansen Gas / Electric water heater.

The Badger Extreme comes standard with the Snomaster 56 litre fridge/freezer but they have recently made a few adjustments to allow the Snomaster 82 litre to be fitted.

Exterior
The exterior of the Badger Caravans comes in a variety of colours of the best quality Gelcoat on the market. This Gelcoat protects the fibreglass and gives it a smooth shiny finish.

The different models are fitted with a varying amount of checkerplate, rock sliders and custom-made jerry can holders with jerry cans.

All the specifications can be found on their website. To date they have not sold a caravan without an awning – the most popular being the 180-degree batwing.

This awning offers zip-up sides and a skirt for those chilly evenings. As there are so many awnings available the Badger Team leave this choice to their customers, and do the installation prior to delivery.

Add-a-Room
Badger have offered an Add-a-Room which attaches to the back of the caravan, but are currently working on another version for those who want the shower unit as well as the extra accommodation.

This room will be to the left of the main entrance door. This new version allows for access to the toilet and shower through a zip door from the outside of the caravan.

Shower Cubicle
This has proved to be a very popular choice, with an integrated shower roof and floor (which is lowered via a winch). The canvas sides are quick and easy to zip up giving one an alternative to campsite ablutions.

Electrics
The Badger Caravans come standard with an Enertec 105A/h deep cycle battery, and a 220v to 12v Victron Blue Smart IP67 battery charger. There are ample plug points including a weatherproof exterior multi-plug.

Solar
Badger have done a few caravans with Solar Installations which are customised to clients’ requirements.
