South African Camping Club 50 Year Anniversary
It was an honour for my wife, Merle, and I to be invited, as representatives of Caravan & Outdoor life magazine, to join in a very special rally to celebrate this club’s 50th Birthday at Bushwillow Park, Karkloof, in early November last year. There couldn’t have been a better venue for the occasion, with the setting on the edge of the forest, the lovely green grass sites, the excellent function facilities and the assistance given by the owners, Irvine and Angie Shaw − who went out of their way to help. The last time we were involved with the SA Camping Club was in the late 60s, when, once a year, the Natal Region of the Caravan Club we belonged to had a combined rally with the SA Camping club.
This is where I first met Ted and Moyra Albon. It was so nice after all these years to chat with Ted and to meet this friendly, happy group, and to see how well the club is still functioning − with 35 families attending the rally. There had been a storm on the Friday; but, by Saturday, the weather had cleared, and we had a lovely blue sky for the start of the proceedings. This was a tree-planting ceremony at 12h00 by the 96-year-old founder, Ted Albon. What a pleasure to see that he could attend, with his wife, Moyra.
