If you want to get away and leave your busy city life behind for a few days, then Rivierplaas will suit you, your whole family and your dogs. Yes, Rivierplaas might be free of electricity but they allow dogs and other non-aggressive animals. The campsite is situated on a working farm on the banks of the Bree River, a mere hour and a half drive from Cape Town, nestled in the area of Scherpenheuwel, south of Worcester. The camping stands are large, grassed and privacy is accentuated by purpose-built hedges of loquat.
Large trees offer good shade in the hot summer months. Each stand has its own half drum braai, just bring along your own grid. Rivierplaas is set on the river which offers a relatively deep swimming area, a foefie slide (which the kids and brave parents will spend hours on), canoes and kayaks for paddling, rafts, and inner tubes for double the fun. There is a 2.5km hiking trail and bird watchers will find many a feathered friend to document and photograph.
There are also a few designated fishing spots offering casting opportunities directly from the river bank where anyone can get lucky with a bite, as the fish are plentiful. The camping stands are generous and easily house large tents, caravans, trailer tents, bush trailers, or even more luxury motorhomes. The Rivierplaas Winkel stocks necessities such as mozzie repellent (very important), ice, wood, Blitz, cold drinks, and bottled water, as well as in-season farm produce and delicious fresh honey. JB, the friendly owner of Rivierplaas, or Kobus, the manager, will welcome you. You might even get a visit from ‘Biltong’ JB’s retired father-in-law.
Friendly pets that get on well with other animals and people, especially children, are welcomed. Loud and aggressive pets will not be allowed and owners are expected to clean up after their pets. And remember, Rivierplaas is a working farm with farm animals and farm dogs that might wander through the campsite, so consideration must also be given to the resident dogs, farm animals, and local wildlife. Rivierplaas has a no music policy where all campers can revel in the tranquillity of this scenic escape. You were warned about the mozzies!
