If fishing is your thing, then look no further than Wonderland Family Break-Away and Fishing, which is situated on the Boschkop Road south of Pretoria.
This resort, which is situated on the Wonderland farm, offers camping, day visits, a playground for children, and the option of fishing in five dams and the Boschkop River.
Owner Henk Janse van Rensburg has been living on the farm for over a quarter of a century. As he is a family man and a passionate fisherman, Henk developed Wonderland with its five dams specifically so that families could camp, enjoy the surrounding bushveld, and enjoy some fishing.
The series of dams is fed by the crystalclear Boschkop River which originates as a spring about a kilometre upstream from the dams. Oh, the joys of a small rural stream, pure and clear, without a hint of man-made pollution!
The dams are stocked with bass, carp, tilapia and barbel; and in winter, Henk also stocks the dams with brown- and rainbow trout. I watched a youngster catch a 2.5kg brown trout right next to my caravan’s back window!
Wonderland has 20 stands spread out evenly around the dams – which means that everyone has the water’s edge at the “front door”. While all of the stands are suitable for camping in tents, only nine are for caravans. Up to six people are allowed per stand, and there is one big stand that can accommodate up to twelve people.
Each stand has its own brick braai facility, a tap with drinkable water, and 220v power outlets. The ablution blocks are within reasonable walking distance of the stands and have flush toilets, hot showers and scullery facilities.
There is a small central lapa between the dams where you can get cooldrinks and ice. Wood is also available, just ask Elias Ndala. Elias was incredibly helpful throughout my stay.
For the kids, there’s a special small dam to fish in, as well as a play park and an above-ground swimming pool.
For day visitors, there are braai areas next to the water – no need to book.
