Prairie Park is situated at Southport on the KZN South Coast. Pete and Bev Budd took over the park in the middle of last year and have been upgrading it ever since. On my recent visit I couldn’t believe the difference they’d already made, firstly by cutting back the overgrown bush while ensuring visitors still enjoy the benefit of nice shady sites.
South coast comfort
They’ve also created a boma for bonfire evenings, tackled lots of painting and general cleaning jobs, upgraded the communal braai area and put in a pub. The kitchen has been upgraded to serve takeaways, and there’s a shop during the peak season. They’ve also built two self-catering units, a four-sleeper and an eight-sleeper … and there are plans for even more.
Besides this new development, the resort also offers 35 caravan sites and six tent sites, all grassed, with mains electricity and taps nearby, the majority shaded. There are two ablution blocks and a laundry with washing machine and tumble dryer. The security is great: the entire park is surrounded by an electric fence, and there’s a patrol service as well as 24-hour access control.
The resort has a recreation area with swimming pools. During the peak December season they run a holiday programme which includes a jumping castle for the kids. And this is all just a short drive from your fill of the South Coast’s numerous spectacular beaches, rocky outcrops and tidal pools, and the area’s many interesting holiday attractions. Bev is a mosaic artist, and she plans to start craft classes for the local community and launch a Sunday craft market. The couple’s goal is to build Prairie Park up to be one of the top holiday resorts on the South Coast … and they’re certainly well on the way to doing just that…
