Resort Review: Montagu Caravan Park

The historic town of Montagu, founded in 1851, is one of the “must-visit” towns along the now well-known Route 62 in the Western Cape. The town was once known as “Agter Cogmanskloof”, and lies between the Keisie and Kingna Rivers.

Words by Richard van Ryneveld

‘If, before now, you have only passed through this town surrounded by mountains, I recommend staying over for a few days to explore the village and its surroundings. There is plenty to do.

I like the cavaranner’s grapevine. A major reason a lot of us camp is not only to be out in the wilds but a larger part of it is the camaraderie found amongst fellow campers. You inevitably find yourself sitting around the campfire talking about your favourite campsite. Montagu Caravan Park is a venue that often comes up.

The privately-owned caravan park is situated in what was an old apricot orchard. Although it lies near the centre of town, it doesn’t feel that way and is very tranquil and relaxing. In fact, the ducks and peacocks walking around give the camp an almost farmlike atmosphere. I must say I felt very welcome – from the big fluffy cat on the reception counter, to the friendly staff you booked me in.

To get to the caravan park, you go to the southern end of Bath Street and cross a cement drift over the small Cogsmanskloof River, before driving up to the entrance gate.

When approaching the gates, one looks up at the surrounding Langeberg Mountains, through which the famous Cogmanskloof runs to connect Montagu to Ashton and Robertson.

The campsites in Montagu Caravan Park are generously sized, well grassed and level. All have braai facilities with an electrical point. Taps and rubbish bins are well positioned between sites.

The large ablution blocks (seven in total, spread out through the resort), the scullery, and the laundry facilities are all first class. I noticed that the staff were constantly busy making sure that everything was kept spotless at the resort. Even though it is a large resort and has the potential of having hundreds of people camping at a time, you’ll never want for hot water: each shower has its own gas geyser!

Montagu Caravan Park is a paradise for children. For a start, there are three swimming pools: a large pool that is heated in winter (only for adults and children under supervision), a smaller heated indoor pool, and a small pool with a water slide.

Then the resort also has a large dam. I took note of some colourful paddle boats, and at sunset I saw a fellow camper with his fishing rod mooching back to his caravan. The dam is well stocked with carp and tilapia.

If your young ones are not in the mood for water sports, there’s more than enough to do on dry land, as well. We all know how much kids love bicycling, and you’ll see an abundance of this activity in Montagu Caravan Park. There’s also a playground, a TV room with DStv, and a play room. The park is gated and fenced, with good security, so parents can also relax in the comfort of knowing that their cubs are safe.

It needs to be noted that the management does keep an eye out for unruly children, ensuring that they do not ruin the peaceful atmosphere for those who want just to chill out or catch a lazy midday snooze; Montagu Caravan Park has built up a reputation for having strict rules and sticking to them.

Everything about Montagu Caravan Park reflects the care and maintenance that has gone into keeping it pristinely neat and clean. The flower beds and gardens are also lovely.

Montagu Caravan Park offers other accommodation as well as caravanning and camping. There’s a 4-sleeper cottage overlooking the dam, a 2-sleeper cottage with mountain views, plus luxury 4-sleeper wooden huts and a luxury backpackers hut.
