We found a three-berther that’s a solid 12-year-old and, well, in need of just a bit of TLC. By the time you read this, Tygerberg Caravans will no doubt have her in shipshape condition, and this 2000 Gypsey Raven will be ready for its new home.

High-flying RavenIt may have been the smallest model in the Gypsey range back in 1999, but the Raven quickly spread its wings when it came to gaining popularity, attracting enthusiasm from many an avid caravaner.

This 2000 Gypsey Raven has been the prized possession of only one owner – a testament to its functionality and all-round caravan appeal. When we paid her a visit in the Tygerberg Caravans display area, we found a little gem with a whole lot of character and plenty of mileage still left in her tyres. It’s no wonder the Gypsey name has always been a favourite among caravaners.

The interior, although used, retains its pleasing woodgrain finish, and the earthy tones make it a peaceful and relaxing living space. The useful storage compartments allow for extra baggage, eliminating that unnecessarily cluttered feeling. A major plus is the large storage space located underneath the double island bed, which, contrary to popular belief, fits snugly in the rear of the van. (Take care not to overload this compartment.) The dinette at the front coverts into a single bed, an ideal extra sleeping space. The dinette’s multifunctional space also holds a large storage area, easily accessible from the outside.

The 220 V electrical system mildly discourages any ‘destination unknown’ travel plans, as you will need to aim for parks that have a mains power supply. The pop-top is an important feature of the caravan’s design: it gives the Raven a lower profile when towing and enhances ventilation. This particular van appears to have benefited from plenty of TLC, with all crockery and utensils still intact, while the LG microwave and small bar fridge-freezer add a touch of modern technology to the overall package.

With a GVM of 980 kg and a tare of 750 kg, you can load 230 kg of gear, luggage and food into the van. As the GVM is relatively low, you’re allowed to tow with a small-engined vehicle, making this a perfect match for any caravan enthusiast. By investing in an all-time favourite like the Raven, you’re more likely to be sure of a sound, reliable structure and an even better resale value.
