The New Year is here, and with the fresh start comes a fresh cycle of public holidays.

Let’s face it – a two-day weekend just isn’t long enough for a proper outdoor adventure. Luckily for you, we’ve put together a guide on how to make the most of your leave days in 2018. And all it takes is a bit of careful planning.

If you play your cards right, putting in just 19 days of leave this year could get you a total of 47 days off!

Here are the combinations you should know:

Wednesday 21 March: Human Rights Day

Celebrated on the 10th of December worldwide, South Africans are given the day off in March in remembrance of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre.

Take two days off either side of the holiday. Invest two, reap five.

Friday 30 March & Monday 2 April: Easter

Arguably SA’s favourite long weekend, Easter weekend is traditionally family time, especially this year, when it falls within school holidays.

Take leave during the school holiday week after the weekend. Invest four, reap ten.

Friday 27 April & Tuesday 1 May: Freedom Day & Worker’s Day

While Monday 30 April is only a school holiday, this is a long weekend you simply can’t afford to miss – worker or not!

Take leave on the school holiday and two before or after the long weekend. Invest three, reap seven.

Thursday 9 August: National Women’s Day

Women deserve to be celebrated every day, but this one particular day commemorates the 20 000 who protested the pass laws at the Union Buildings in 1956.

Friday 10 August is a school holiday. Invest one, reap four.

Alternatively, take the days prior to the holiday off as well. Invest four, reap nine.

Monday 24 September: Heritage Day

Call it National Braai Day if you want, but either way, it’s a celebration of our nation’s unity. You don’t really need to take any leave here – there’s no secret method!

Another celebration of harmony, but another dead rubber. Because this holiday falls on a Sunday, you’ll get Monday off. Three days to enjoy the December weather before the mad festive rush.

SCHOOL TERMS

If you’re planning on travelling with kids, you should take note of this year’s school holiday dates:

7 Dec 2017 – 16 Jan 2018

29 March – 9 April

25 June – 16 July

1 October – 8 October

13 December 2018 – 8 January 2019

Wednesday 25 & Thursday 26 December: Christmas Day & Day of Goodwill

Ah, Christmas. The final consolidation of the long year, spent with family, friends and delicious food. A chance to be thankful for the wonderful year of camping and caravanning!

Take leave on the day before Christmas – Monday the 24th. Invest one, reap five.

THE BIG FINISH

The show’s not over yet, folks. The end of the year offers a golden opportunity to join two long weekends into one super vacation!

Combine Day of Reconciliation on 16 December with Christmas and New Year to craft more than two weeks of time off!

Take leave from Tuesday 18 December to Thursday 31 December. Invest eight, reap 18.

Yes, you read that right. 18 days straight at the end of the year, just by saving up eight days’ leave during the year.
