It was a Friday morning when my husband and I decided that we would like to go camping. We only had one night so the only criteria really were that it should be close to home.
We didn’t feel like driving for hours and then taking another while to set up camp; it would take up most of our day.
So, we hopped onto the internet and searched for places that hit fit distance criteria and our budget.
After a while, my husband came across Gonjah – a campsite situated just outside Patensie in the Eastern Cape, and less than an hour away from home. PERFECT!
I immediately contacted them and made a booking.
We were quite excited because this is a campsite in the Baviaans Nature Reserve we haven’t been to yet. And we have been to many campsites inside the Baviaans.
About 2 hours later we jumped in the bakkie and off we went on our one-night adventure, excited to see what Gonjah has to offer.
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived and saw that there were 4 campsites, each with their own private ablution. Not something we have come across often.
That night we set up camp on site number 1.
We were also the only people at the resort that night, which provided us with the perfect opportunity to walk around and familiarize ourselves with all the sites.
The sites are situated in the woods and a stream separates sites 1 and 2 from 3 and 4.
Sites 1 and 2 are situated at the entrance of the resort and sites 3 and 4 were across the stream and a little bit more secluded.
In our opinion, we prefer sites 3 and 4 because it just gives you a bit more privacy, especially if you want to book both sites for a large group (according to the website each site can take up to 8 people).
Site one was a great site and the ablutions were lovely, clean and very pretty. Having your own ablution really does make you feel kind of special.
Gonjah also offers a few 4×4 tracks as well as a 2-3 hour hiking trail up to a waterfall. Unfortunately, because we were only there for one night, we didn’t have time to walk the trail, but when we come back it will be the first thing on our list.
Gonjah was a wonderful experience and if you are looking for something different and close to Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp areas, this is the perfect spot. Close to home but worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of the city.
It’s a great place to unwind and step away from the everyday.
As they say on the website (shhh, don’t tell the kids), but there isn’t a lot of cell phone signal – perfect for unplugging.
We will definitely be back.
