On a recent caravan holiday at Villa Spa, Schalk Faber and his partner Lynn Haupt were out enjoying the scenery in their beautiful hand built caravan called Gitano, which means gypsy. What better place to take some photos for their article than a lush green campsite at Villa Spa. Click here to view this wonderful camping venue.
Let get into the caravan build shall we. The caravan was totally built from scratch. It has a 19mm square tube frame clad with 3mm marine grade ply and overheated with surfboard fibreglass. The insulation is rigi board and the interior is designed around a full size double bed mattress with storage below the bed and various storage compartments within the van.
Schalk and Lyn enjoying their outdoor and camping experiences
The exterior kitchen has a two plate gas cooker, microwave and a slide-out drawer housing a Waeco 12 volt fridge and wash basin facility with a pumped water supply.
The inlays in the woodwork are a work of art
The van is used on a regular basis and is not only a showpiece. We have taken “her” to a number of campsites on the KZN south coast and midlands. She has also seen travel to Bethlehem and the Vryheid exhibitions.
The design is loosely based on the Gypsy Fargo trailers (Romany Gypsies not Gypsy Caravans)
Throw in some stained glass highlights to complement the caravan!
Our caravan won the Best Individual Display Award at the Cars In the Park 2018 exhibition and was featured on Ignition TV’s King of Customs series in 2020.
The interior is spacious with good storage and great levels of comfort
We can only commend Schalk in his efforts to create such a functional work of art. All the hours that were put into making this caravan the best that it could possibly be has certainly paid off. Well done from the Caravan & Outdoor Life team – it’s perfection personified.
