Toyota has enjoyed a long history of producing quality vehicles. The reliability and longevity of the Toyota range is unquestionable and with the introduction of the new Corolla Cross SUV, it is clear they have a new addition to the fold that is set to become a volume seller. What’s more is the Corolla Cross range offers two petrol-electric hybrids that are self-charging (no plugging in) which is a game changer in the SUV market. The Corolla Cross is the first locally produced hybrid from Toyota and with an average fuel consumption of 4.3l / 100km, you won’t often be pulling into the petrol station to fill up.

  • Great vehicle quality & design
  • Class leading spaciousness & comfort
  • Exceptional driving experience
  • Hybrid technology move towards carbon neutrality
  • Exceptional safety & build quality

After spending the day behind the standard petrol version and the hybrid, I can safely say that Toyota have got it just right. If the 800 plus pre-ordered Corolla Cross units are an indicator, then prospective buyers need to get test driving and place their orders quickly, as this range is not going to hang around on showroom floors for any length of time.

The Corolla Cross is manufactured in SA and sales forecasts are in excess of 20 000 units. Although the B and C segment SUV market is populated with many competitors, the Corolla Cross is priced to compete very favourably against the others in both these segments.

Corolla Cross:  three petrol models and two petrol/hybrid models.

The front facade of the Corolla Cross has a strong stance with a double trapezoid grille, Bi-LED headlamps and fog lamps, with auto-retractable colour-coded mirrors. The Cross styling looks equally as good in cityscapes as it does in the country when enjoying a picnic under a gazebo.

The Corolla Cross comes in 7 colour options:

  • Glacier white
  • Celestite grey
  • Platinum white pearl
  • Arizona red
  • Attitude black
  • Chromium silver
  • Cosmic blue

Visibility, ride & handling

Visibility is accentuated from the cabin with smaller A-pillars and repositioned mirrors. The rear offers comfortable seating for passengers with good head and leg room. Handling is smooth and the TNGA platform design offers a highly rigid body structure with improved stability and ride comfort. Optimised front suspension enhances steering response and the newly developed rear torsion beam suspension offers excellent ride comfort. The Corolla Cross also enjoys the best in class turning circle of 10.4 metres.

Under the hood

The petrol Corolla Cross has a 103kw motor, offering 172 Nm of torque and a fuel consumption of 6.8l/100km. The hybrid variants offer a 90kw output with 142 Nm and 164 Nm engine torque and motor. With a frugal fuel consumption under 4.3l / 100km, expect considerable annual savings on your petrol bill.
