Resort Review: My Bush Camp

Over the past couple of years I have visited My Bush Camp quite often, and every time I visit I am amazed at how the camp just keeps improving.

Words and pictures by Brian Jefferies

The beautiful camp, situated on a pristine 21.5ha bushveld farm, is an idyllic place to enjoy a rich bird life and untouched nature. Situated in the bushveld of South Africa’s beautiful Limpopo province, the camp lies approximately 15km west of popular Bela-Bela.

Access to the resort is via a tar road, directly south next to the R516 main Thabazimbi Road.

The camping site and “Honeymoon Chalet” have been in existence since 2000, and have seen a total of four owners. In November 2017, the current owner acquired the property to consolidate the resort with the adjacent farm involved with exotic-game breeding, focussing on Sable antelope, Nyla and Saddleback Impala. These animals can be viewed on a game drive by prior arrangement, but you may even see these animals in the adjacent camps when they stroll along the fence.

My Bush Camp offers various accommodation options – secluded caravan sites, a joint caravan site, a luxury self-catered 10-sleeper Farm House, and the hidden “Honeymoon Chalet” which sleeps up to 4 people. Two further luxury chalets (4 – 6 sleepers) are currently under construction.

The caravan park has 20 stands on well-grassed sites, mostly shaded. Each site can accommodate up to four people and a vehicle.

There is also a Private Campsite with 5 stands, each with a concrete slab (7.5 m x 5m) in a well-shaded area, as well as a private braai. All stands are electrified (220V), and have easy access to water taps. The water is provided from local boreholes and is safe to drink.

The shared ablution block is a spacious neatly-built stone building with a thatched roof. It has 4 showers and toilets. At an additional cost, there are also 5 private lockable bathrooms (2 bathrooms with shower, toilet, basin and bath; 2 bathrooms with bath, shower and basin; and 1 bathroom with toilet, bath and basin) that you can book.

All campers have access to the communal kitchen (with scullery), as well as the entertainment area where you can enjoy some sport or popular TV channels. On hot summer days, you can take a dip in the communal pool to cool off, while watching the birdlife overhead.

There is a facility for campers to clean and flush their portable toilets. Laundry can be done by the park at extra cost. A small, well-stocked shop will tend to your immediate needs.

No dogs and cats are allowed, but feel free to bring your favourite feathered friend, like budgie or parrot, along.

What to do

Apart from the flourishing birdlife at My Bush Camp, there is also lots of game on the surrounding land. Try the beautiful Zebula, where they will take you out on a game drive to see a lot of different animals. There is also a nice golf course, where you will find buck roaming freely on the fairways.

There are at least three nature reserves in the area, all less than 30 minutes’ drive from My Bush Camp. To the west is Mabalingwe, to the north is Bateleur, and to the east lies Hetbad Nature Reserve.

Mabalingwe also offers mountain biking and 4×4 opportunities. Other outdoor activities are centred around Bela-Bela, only 15km away, where you can fish in the dam, enjoy some water sports, or go horse riding.

If you enjoy a nice cold beer around the braai fire, take one day to drive to L’abri Fountain Brewery, less than 30km from My Bush Camp. The brewery always has at least 6 unique craft beers on tap, but they have in the past even had up to as much as 25 beers from seven different breweries! Pop over for a beer tasting, or a beer and food pairing for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
