We’ve resolved to make 2014 a year to fall in love with camping all over again, so where better to start than setting down a list of great campsites and resorts from around the world that we’d love to visit.

UMLALAZI NATURE RESERVE
Mtunzini, KZN North Coast
A campsite set in lush dune forests as well as an enormous beach – and the fact that this is all only two hours from home makes it our favourite weekend destination. www.ekznw.co.za

BERG-EN-DAL
Kruger National Park
My favourite campsite in the park, besides which it’s the most accessible for KZN-ers. www.sanparks.org

MAHAI CAMPSITE
Royal Natal, Drakensberg
Heaven on earth – enough said. www.kznwildlife.com

BUSHBABY LODGE
near Hluhluwe / Imfolozi Game Reserve
This has been on my wishlist for a while, and I hope this will be the year we make it there! www.bushbabylodge.co.za

CHEDDAR GORGE
Somerset, UK
We stayed here when we toured the UK in a mobile home some years ago. The campsite was one of the best we stayed at, and Cheddar Gorge Village is amazing: it has a fascinating history, offers heaps of photo opportunities, and wonderful shopping. Oh, and do try the Scrumpy Jack cider if you go there! www.cheddargorge.co.uk

KEURBOOMS CARAVAN PARK
Plettenberg Bay
Besides being a well-run park, what I love is that I don’t have to get into a car in order to go down to the beach. www.keurboomslagoon.co.za

NATURE’S VALLEY
Garden Route
It’s quiet and has lots of birdlife, there are lots of beautiful walks, as well as canoeing on the lagoon and some lovely beaches to enjoy. www.sanparks.org

MANSFIELD RESERVE
Port Alfred
I love the birdlife, the game, all the wonderful walks and there’s a real back-to-nature feel about the place. www.riverhotels.co.za/mansfield

PRETORIUSKOP
Kruger National Park
Lots of game, good birdlife and a beautiful swimming pool. www.sanparks.org

KUNENE RIVER LODGE
Large river, good birdlife, interesting drives and a very well-run camp. www.kuneneriverlodge.com
