Jewel of the Bushveld

“You can get out of the bush, but the bush can’t get out of you!”

The best decision we ever made was to become members of ATKV. For us, as campers, we get everything that our hearts desire.

As I was sitting in ATKV Eiland Spa, I had a sudden urge to write about the lush trees and picture-perfect mountains, the neat camping sites and the friendly staff.

My dream had finally become a reality, as for years I had wanted to park my home on wheels at this resort. During the busy month, the resort is packed to the brim with caravans and tents. There are even a few imported units like Dethleffs!

We pitched our camp on stand 102 in the A block, surrounded by campers just like us – friendly, and with a lust for life. Real bush junkies.

When we stopped at our spot, two young men came over and set up our tent for us. Within minutes, everything was ready, and we were invited for a braai with our neighbours. They even carried our chairs and table to their stand! You won’t find such enthusiasm at a hotel, lodge or any other accommodation.

ATKV Eiland Spa is a place we will definitely visit again, and again, and again. And not just for one month at a time, but rather for four or more!

Early in the morning, the sun winked at us and we knew that it was time to wake up and start enjoying the beautiful day. We walked the hiking routes every morning, and even saw hippos. There are lots of antelope and bird species to see here, as well.

We loved the resort’s heated swimming pool, which everybody calls the “hippo pool”, because you see only heads sticking out.

The ablutions and washing-up areas are tastefully done and in good condition. There are enough showers and everything is shiny clean. The bathrooms are women-friendly; one can blow-dry one’s hair and “put on one’s face”… and the long mirror is something to fall in love with! The women could not stop praising the facilities.

The resort has washing machines and dry-cleaners, and even ironing boards. The reception staff, cleaners and resort workers are well trained.

Around the Campfire

ATKV Eiland Spa is a wonderful resort. Apart from the sights and the friendly people, it is made even more special by all the activities on offer, including lawn bowls. (Some of the best players from all over the country stay here for months at a time to enjoy the facility). We also played “jukskei” and “hoefie”.

On Sundays, the resort has a church service. We did not miss a single one. Thank you, Pastor Van Jaarsveld, for the striking message that you shared with us – every service was wonderful.

The Koswerf Restaurant has a warm atmosphere, and I am convinced that there is a Master Chef in the kitchen! The dishes are beautiful, and we ate there almost every day. We recommend the oxtail with farm vegetables, and the chicken salad and pasta. Service is world-class. Well done, Koswerf; we love you.

The Resort Manager is a great asset to Eiland Spa. He is always available, and ready to help if there is a problem. ATKV must be proud to have someone like him at the helm.

It was with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to ATKV Eiland Spa and headed home. But we will be back!

Lastly, thanks to “2spore”, our caravan – you take us to the most beautiful places. You are our number one, and without you we would not have had such unforgettable times.
