Five Hessequa campsites showing their true spring colours

When the request came in for me to undertake a trip in a brand new motorhome and review five municipal campsites that fall under the umbrella of the Hessequa Municipality, I was on the phone making the necessary arrangements before you could say Jack Sprat. The trip would start at the Witsand Caravan Park, then we’d move on to the Jongensfontein Caravan Park, followed by Ellensrust Caravan Park, Preekstoel Caravan Park and ending at Gourits Caravan Park. It didn’t take long to plan the trip as August is out-of-season and most of the campsites had freely available camping stands and chalets. The drive to our first stay was scenic, with wide, rolling expanses of bright yellow canola flowers in bloom all along the way.

#1 WITSAND CARAVAN PARK

The Witsand Middle Camp is located at the eastern end of Witsand right on the beach and offers great walks along clean beaches, excellent fishing from the beach or rocks, swimming and various other fun activities for the whole family.

#2 JONGENSFONTEIN CARAVAN PARK

Jongensfontein Caravan Park has 18 self-catering chalets that are the perfect holiday escape, if camping is not your thing.

#3 ELLENSRUST CARAVAN PARK

This large campsite has 338 stands, all of which are grassed and have power. The campsite borders the Blue Flag swimming beach and is close to the Goukou River.

#4 PREEKSTOEL CARAVAN PARK

Preekstoel is situated about 4km from Stilbaai and borders the clean, white sandy beach and shallow bay that offers a variety of water sports, which include swimming, surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, angling sailing, canoeing, boating and waterskiing

#5 GOURITSMOND CARAVAN PARK

If you really want to get away from it all, then Gouritsmond Caravan Park should be your destination of choice. It is housed in the perfect coastal setting with the river mouth and the beach converging to form the focal point of this quaint town.
