Dometic recalls cookers that could cause serious injury

Dometic has issued a recall of some of their gas cookers that could cause “serious injury” or “in the worst case… explode” due to leakage.

In an article posted by Dometic Global on their website, the company warns customers to stop using the affected product immediately, close the shut-off valve and keep it closed!

Dometic, which manufactures market-leading products for outdoor use, has now issued a voluntary recall on various gas cookers from their range.

On their website, Dometic says: “The background to this decision is information concerning a potential leakage of the assemblies installed in cookers (cooker regulators and/or supply tubes).

“Due to the leakage, an undetermined amount of gas can leak during the service life of the products which can ignite where a suitable ignition source is present. As a result of this, a flame formation can occur around the regulators. Furthermore, it cannot be excluded in the worst case that the gas-air mixture explodes.

“This can seriously injure the users of our products but also uninvolved third parties.

“The Dometic Team apologises for any inconvenience caused and will do their best to rectify the problem.”

The company has requested anyone who has purchased one of the affected cookers to “please stop using the product immediately, close the shut-off valve and keep it closed”!

CaravanSA was made aware of the article on the Dometic website after being alerted by caravaners from around the world, and in the interest of safety published it even while we are waiting for a direct response from the global head office to clarify whether the affected units are also in South Africa

Meanwhile, we have received comment from Tourism Holdings Rental SA (THRSA) – the recently appointed distributor of Dometic in South Africa. Click here for their official response.

THRSA say that cookers starting with stock-keeping units starting with 960 were not brought to South Africa (see the relevance of stock-keeping unit numbers below). However, cookers that were imported directly could still be affected.

CaravanSA is still investigating whether affected units could have been imported directly by other caravan and motorhome manufacturers, and we will keep you updated.

A full list products affected by the voluntary recall can be found at the bottom of this article.

How to check if your cooker is on the recall list.

    1. Is the installed cooker the original cooker you bought together with your vehicle?

If yes, please check the first registration or production date of your vehicle. If this date is before October 2020, the cooker is not affected and nothing needs to be done. If the date is October 2020 or thereafter, you need to check the data label of the cooker. If it is not the original installed cooker, you also need to check the data label of the cooker.

    1. Did you buy the cooker from a retailer before October 2020?

If yes, the cooker is not affected, and nothing needs to be done. If you bought the cooker from a retailer in October 2020 or thereafter, you need to check the data label of the cooker. If you don’t have the exact date of purchase, you also need to check the data label of the cooker.

    1. The data label should be provided together with the cooker manual.

If not available, the data label can be found on the bottom of the cooker. If you have no access to the bottom of the cooker, your dealer/installer can help you with this check.

    1. On the data label, you can find the SKU.

If it starts with 96000… and is shown in the list at the bottom of this article, your cooker is affected. Example of a data label attached to the bottom of a cooker with SKU:

You can also refer to the operating instructions for your vehicle for the precise product description of the cooker installed in your vehicle.

Instructions on how to close the shut-off valve properly are given below:

Once you have done so, please contact your dealer or the nearest Dometic Service Partner to initiate all further steps according to our specifications quickly and easily (testing and, if considered necessary, replacement). You can find our service partners on our homepage under the menu item “Find a dealer”.
