Nestling among thorn trees on 300 hectares of African bushveld, this nature reserve is the perfect peaceful getaway. A one-hour drive from Pretoria or Joburg will get you to Hartbeeshoek, near Brits in the North West province. The resort has 42 shady caravan or tent stands, most of which are grassed and have a paved area. Stands have 220 V power, braai facilities and running water.
There are modern and clean communal ablutions, as well as a family bathroom, new luxury private ablutions, washing-up facilities and a laundry. If you’re not towing or bringing a tent, you can stay in one of the ten selfcatering chalets, each of which sleeps either four or six, or the luxury guest house, which sleeps up to ten.
The park has a games room, a kiosktype shop stocked with the basic groceries and a conference hall that’s fully airconditioned and can seat up to 200 people – just right for a conference or wedding. The entrance gate is secure: the guard will phone the office to verify your booking before admitting you into the reserve. Guards patrol the park at night, enabling you to enjoy an untroubled sleep.
In our experience the park’s owners have always been very friendly and helpful. When we stayed there recently there was a group of young schoolchildren on a camp, but they were so well organised that we hardly knew they were there. How lovely it was the next morning to see these little people enjoying themselves, under adult supervision!
Activities: There are so many things you can do in the resort: quad-biking, game drives, hiking, horse riding for young and old, birdwatching and even putt-putt. Fishing is allowed in the dam, but any fish caught must be thrown back. There’s a children’s playground, a swimming pool, a kiddies pool – and a heated pool! Animals you’re likely to spot in the reserve include blue wildebeest, warthog, duiker, giraffe, blesbok, zebra, red hartebeest, kudu, impala and ostrich.
