Compact & Complete

Story by Kobus Botha Photos by Kobus Botha and others

Here’s a soft-roader that ticks all the boxes. It’s spacious, well built, and has plenty of power to get you over the mountains, even with a caravan on your tail. The model tested here has a 6-speed manual transmission which offers wellspaced ratios and smooth shifting. This vehicle is available with two engine choices: the 2WD petrol, and the 4WD diesel. As you might suspect, the diesel is a better option for towing as it has more torque, and is more economical.

The CR-V is a full-house offering, boasting steering-wheel controls, heated seats, Bluetooth cell-phone connectivity, and dual climate control. It has a 12 V power socket in the boot for your fridge and accessories, as well as another up front in the central console – along with USB and AUX input points for the sound system.

Towing a caravan feels safer than ever with the Honda, thanks to the stability control system which is able to counter caravan− or trailer sway. ABS brakes and traction control combine to form a formidable cocoon of control; plus, there are airbags front and sides. For you kids in the back, I’ve got news for you… the driver will know whether you’re strapped in or not, thanks to integrated sensors and warning lights on the dash.

This is the perfect vehicle for couples with kids and elderly folk. So, campers and caravanners, take note!
