When you make your way to the front gate and reception area at George Country Resort, there is little indication as to the beauty and shaded tranquillity that lies within. After chatting to the very friendly Mari at reception and getting the resort access code, we made our way into this wonderful campsite that is set amongst many large trees – offering excellent shade to campers. There are 126 stands that are shaded and grassed with 220V power points. There are scullery and laundry facilities available and the ablution facilities are clean and neat, offering hot showers and baths. George

When the request came in for me to undertake a trip in a brand new motorhome and review five municipal campsites that fall under the umbrella of the Hessequa Municipality, I was on the phone making the necessary arrangements before you could say Jack Sprat. The trip would start at the Witsand Caravan Park, then we’d move on to the Jongensfontein Caravan Park, followed by Ellensrust Caravan Park, Preekstoel Caravan Park and ending at Gourits Caravan Park. It didn’t take long to plan the trip as August is out-of-season and most of the campsites had freely available camping stands and

The Jongensfontein Caravan Park is the flagship of the Hessequa Municipality, and with good reason. It’s simply wow! This thickly grassed and tiered gem of a campsite is set right on the beach and offers everything you’d want in a holiday location – it’s as safe as houses. What’s more, there is not an electric fence in sight in Jongensfontein. The campsite itself is carefully manicured with power points and water close on hand. The stands are large and, given the surrounding beauty with sea views and blue skies, you’ll need to book early in season as this campsite bursts

Preekstoel is situated about 4km from Stilbaai and borders the clean, white sandy beach and shallow bay that offers a variety of water sports, which include swimming, surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, angling sailing, canoeing, boating and waterskiing. If sport is not on your agenda, relax and do a bit of sunbathing on the pristine beach, while the kids frolic in the warm sea. Communal braai areas are available to guests, with power and water available at each stand. Preekstoel Caravan Park has 404 camping stands allowing six people per site as well as 16 self-catering chalets and a youth hostel

We arrived at Witsand Caravan Park in the evening and it was spitting with rain, but that did not put us off, as we were in the well-appointed Discover FunX – with everything we needed within arm’s reach. So there were no tents to erect, no flapping awnings, just a quick plug into the power and the rest was easy. We enjoyed the warm interior of the motorhome, while the bad weather continued outside. We then made a simple snack supper of cheese, liver paté and savoury biscuits, after which my better half fired up her laptop to do some

If you really want to get away from it all, then Gouritsmond Caravan Park should be your destination of choice. It is housed in the perfect coastal setting with the river mouth and the beach converging to form the focal point of this quaint town. If water sports are on your holiday agenda, then you’ve come to the right place, but if relaxing next to a braai fire in the neatly grassed Gouritsmond Caravan Park is too, then you’ll feel right at home. Birdwatchers will find an abundance of birds in the area and they should keep their binoculars on

This large campsite has 338 stands, all of which are grassed and have power. There are also 21 self-catering chalets and bungalows offering accommodation for groups between two and six people, which are kitted out with a bathroom, kitchen, crockery, cutlery, fridge, microwave and braai facilities – for those who don’t feel like setting up tents and camping. Ablutions are clean and neat offering hot showers, basins and toilets. The campsite borders the Blue Flag swimming beach and is close to the Goukou River. Holidaymakers can enjoy a number of activities in and around this cosmopolitan campsite, such as mountain

The one thing that struck me immediately on my arrival at Kleine Bela, was the sheer size of some of the trees – particularly the huge Wurgvy (Ficus craterostoma) which is said to be one of the largest and oldest trees of its kind in Limpopo. Koos and Anna Marie, the owners of this great resort, told me that political parties used to gather in the shade of this giant tree to hold their meetings. Kleine Bela has 44 stands in the main camping area and six permanent stands for long-stay campers and caravans. Each stand has access to electricity
