I was on my way to Jackal Creek some four kilometres from the coffee shop on the R364 to Clanwilliam. Jackals Creek is another of those wonderful conglomerations only the West Coast could produce. Firstly, the oversized, big white rondawel is a pub, art gallery, wedding venue, restaurant, or just the home of local character Curnall. Writing a note, I asked Curnall what his surname was. His immediate answer was, “Moneyflower”. Looking a bit puzzled, he gave me what I was to learn was one of his signature laughs, “No man it’s, Gelderbloem.” I liked him from the start. Jackal…

Fynbos Guest Farm & Animal Sanctuary is set at the foot of the Witzenberg Mountains almost equidistant between Ceres and Tulbagh. It’s a short 130km drive from Cape Town, making this an ideal destination for those wanting to get away for a quick weekend break. But, believe me, once you’ve tasted the fruits that Fynbos has to offer, you’ll be prompted to extend your holiday for a few extra days or phone in sick. Flu is rife this time of year. We were met by the friendly Peter Nel and Maurice Lancaster, joint owners of Fynbos, who gave us a…

I was extremely lucky to get a last minute stand at Bass Lake Lodge outside Pretoria. It was a long weekend and this is an extremely popular venue, less than 30 minutes’ drive from Pretoria. It is pretty much booked out every weekend and holiday of the year. Hook, line & sinker! My well-grassed 12 x 12m stand, with its own power point and portable braai, was directly opposite one of the two ablution blocks. In fact, all 34 stands are relatively close to the bathrooms and toilets. And I have to say that these facilities are the best I…

The roadside display of dislodged number plates on the dust road to Tamboti Vreugde is evidence of the road corrugations, but the trip is a quick one from the tarred road, lasting mere minutes before you arrive at the entrance to the resort. The campsites are grassed and beautifully maintained, and the rustic chalets are adorned with fittings made from wood that is indigenous to the area. There is a large function area and a beautiful chapel that seats 160 people, that is available for weddings and special events. The chapel is straight out of a fairytale. The sounds…

One of the bonuses of visiting Eagle Falls Country Lodge was the road we took to get there. The scenic and engaging dirt track from Dysseldorp (off the N12 between Oudtshoorn and De Rust) is one I’ve done many times on my adventure motorbike, but I wanted to show my better half, Annette, this cross-section of pristine mountainous countryside. Yet, if long rambles on dirt tracks are not your thing, or suitable for your rig, don’t despair, there is a much shorter and less bumpy way to get there off the N9, about 45km west of Uniondale. But however you…

I first started setting up the 2-sleeper Crown Trax caravan at Site 6 of the main campsite. The main campsite has six campsites all with electricity, a braai facility and potable water. The main campsite was chock a block full, but Hettie Vermeulen had kept the last of the campsites alongside the small water canal open for me. Hettie and Neels Vermeulen, the owners of Riverside Paradise, were waiting to welcome me to their piece of lovely bushveld. Hettie is obviously a good reader of people for she immediately said, “Wouldn’t you like to have a look at the bush…

After sticking to the 20km/h speed limit restriction for the short drive down the main tarred road, leading through the Dinokeng Game Reserve, I turned off for the two-minute drive onto the dust road to Tshikwalo Lodge. When I pulled up at reception, I was met by the superfriendly reception staff and then made my way to the campsite. My campsite overlooked the volleyball court and the swimming pool, and was the perfect spot from which to view the rest of the campsite. After putting up my trailer tent and a quick unpack of my photographic gear and duffel bag,…

Pine Lodge Resort is well manicured and each caravan and camping stand has electricity and water. There are numerous activities for the whole family, such as the Pirates Cove 9-hole minigolf course, a trampoline, jungle gym and a giant chess set. You can even take a donkey cart ride to the Cape Recife lighthouse. There is a basketball court for the kids, a games room with a pool table, darts, table tennis and mini soccer and a restaurant called Ziggy’s Rock & Reggae Restaurant that serves great pub meals for the whole family and good beer, while the Seagulls Coffee…

When you make your way to the front gate and reception area at George Country Resort, there is little indication as to the beauty and shaded tranquillity that lies within. After chatting to the very friendly Mari at reception and getting the resort access code, we made our way into this wonderful campsite that is set amongst many large trees – offering excellent shade to campers. There are 126 stands that are shaded and grassed with 220V power points. There are scullery and laundry facilities available and the ablution facilities are clean and neat, offering hot showers and baths. George…
