Tucked along a quiet curve of the Breede River, The Gaia Sanctuary offers a camping experience that is raw, simple and deeply restorative. This is camping the way it used to be – shade, river, fire, stars – backed by the rhythm of a working eco-farm and the wide Langeberg peaks in the distance.

And for those who love travelling with their best friend – yes, Gaia Sanctuary is pet friendly!

The main off-grid camping area has eight sites set along the riverbank under a canopy of young and old trees. Stands are mostly unmarked and natural, letting you choose your own spot beneath the branches.

There is no electricity in the campsite, but there is some solar lighting at the communal areas.

Close to the campsite is a big shared firepit, braai area, and some wooden tables and chairs. For the young ones there is a wooden jungle gym to play on.

The campsite ablutions are rustic but neat, with a cold shower and a compost toilet, as well as a washing up station.

Gaia Sanctuary also offers two premium campsites that are away from the off-grid camping area: The River Wooden Deck campsite and Milkwood Wooden Deck campsite.

The River Deck is the standout, a large 6m x 5m platform set right on the riverbank under towering trees – shaded, cool and positioned for slow mornings and long evenings overlooking the water.

The Milkwood Deck sits slightly higher, tucked into vegetation for extra privacy. It offers a more elevated feel with filtered views through the branches. Cars can’t park next to this deck, so it stays quiet and undisturbed.

Gaia Sanctuary also offers a handful of other accommodation options for guests who want comfort while still being immersed in nature.

The A-Frame Cabin is a timber hideaway with a queen loft bed, wide-opening side panels and a deck that feels suspended above the river. There is a small kitchenette equipped with a bar fridge, pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, kettle, sink, braai utensils, bath towels, and a gas heater. It has its own private compost toilet, and the shared glampsite ablutions with a hot shower and flushing toilet are a short walk away.

The River Cabin is a charming four-sleeper with a private outdoor shower and a wooden deck made for slow mornings. It also has a fully equipped kitchenette, as well as a private outdoor shower (black pipe shower that heats up when there is sun), and a compost toilet.

A short walk from the “glamping” accommodation (camping decks and cabins) is a communnal kitchenette with a dining table, 3 plate gas cooker, double sink & braai.

This is also where you will find the “glamping” ablutions, which consist of a flush toilet, and a shower area with hot water (gas). The ablutions are very neat, and it does feel like glamping when you have a glass door for your camping shower!

There is also the Topdeck Bus – a playful double-decker school bus conversion with a bathtub, bunk beds, and sweeping 180-degree mountain views. The Topdeck is a distance away from the camping and cabins, located at the top of the farm, so you would need to drive down to the river and jungle gym, or it’s about a 12 to 15 minute walk.

When you’re ready to explore, the farm offers canoeing, fishing, river swims, gentle walks and birdwatching.
