Set in the Leeuwgedacht Conservancy near Cullinan, Roratau Tented Bush Camp offers an immersive bush experience where guests are surrounded by the sights and sounds of untamed nature. True to its name – which means “the place where the lions roar” – the camp is enveloped by night calls from lions, hyenas, jackals, and owls, creating a rich atmosphere that enhances the sense of being truly away from it all.
The camp features five spacious, fully equipped permanent tents designed to provide comfort without compromising the rustic charm of the bushveld. The Zebra and Kudu tents each sleep two guests in queen-size beds, while the Blesbok, Blouwildebees and Rooibok tents accommodate up to four guests, with a queen-size bed and additional single beds or sleeper couches. Every tent includes a private en-suite bathroom with a shower, and linen and towels are provided – although guests are requested to bring their own swimming towels.
Each unit includes a self-catering kitchen equipped with a two-plate stove, fridge, cutlery and crockery. There are no microwaves, keeping the experience rooted in simplicity and nature. Outside, each tent has a braai area and a solar-powered private hot tub, perfect for soaking in the views while enjoying a sundowner. Shaded parking is provided next to each tent for convenience, and wood and charcoal are available for purchase at the camp. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted in the tented accommodation.

In addition to the luxury tents, Roratau caters to rustic campers with five well-spaced caravan and tent sites. These sites are equipped with a 6-amp power point, a nearby water point, and a private braai area. The communal ablution block is within walking distance and includes two family bathrooms each with a double shower, toilet and basin, as well as a single shower and toilet for additional use. A washing-up area is also located close to the ablutions.
For campers wanting more privacy, the Bosvark campsite offers space for two caravans and includes its own private ablution and braai area. The Vlakvark site is suitable for a group of up to four caravans and features private ablutions, a boma area for social braais, and a shaded splash pool for cooling off on hot days.
Roratau’s boma area is also available for group bookings. It includes an open-air bonfire pit, a built-in braai, a double fridge to keep drinks cold, and tables and chairs under a roofed section – making it ideal for shared meals or celebrations in the bush.

Guests at Roratau can enjoy a variety of nature-based activities. There’s a five-kilometre hiking trail and a twenty-kilometre mountain biking route on the property, allowing visitors to explore the terrain at their own pace. Game drives can be arranged on request, offering the chance to see animals such as kudu, giraffe, zebra, blue wildebeest, blesbuck, red hartebeest and warthogs. The camp is also a rewarding destination for birdwatchers.
For those travelling by air, Roratau has its own landing strip. Day excursions to the nearby village of Cullinan can be arranged, and the Lion and Cheetah Sanctuary is accessible by request. There is also a 4×4 trail located nearby for visitors with off-road vehicles.
A restaurant and cash bar with DStv are located at the neighbouring lodge and can be accessed by Roratau guests. Although there is no Wi-Fi, the camp has cell phone reception.
Whether relaxing in a hot tub under the stars or waking to the distant call of a lion, Roratau Tented Bush Camp is a peaceful, private retreat for adults seeking to experience the bush in comfort and simplicity.
