Mac Nicol’s Caravan Resort – Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal

If you are looking for a memorable, relaxing camping breakaway, then Mac Nicol’s Caravan Resort at Bazley Beach in KwaZulu-Natal is the place to go.

The resort is owned and run by the Mac Nicol family, who themselves are caravaners and have been in the caravan park business since 1971… so they know what you need to make your holiday break the best.

Mac Nicol’s (less than 100kms from Durban) is situated on the banks of the Ifafa Lagoon, just 90 meters from the beach.

Campers will arrive to a cup of tea while the friendly staff erect your tent for you (if you choose). Speaking of tea, Mac Nicol’s have become well known for their tea and scones that are served every morning at 10:30am.

Camping sites at Mac Nicol’s are large and are mainly shaded, with electricity supply of 10 amps. The ablutions are clean and modern, and there are laundry facilities at each one.

The resort has two swimming pools, one of which is heated in the cooler months enabling swimming throughout the year.

There is well stocked shop and bottle store, with a takeaway shop that is open during long weekends and in-season.

To keep the children busy, there are trampolines, a jungle gym, huge hall, TV room, the Bazley Trails, canoeing on the lagoon, and more. During the busy season there is also a full entertainment programme.

Apart from the well-known tea and scones, Mac Nicol’s are also famous for their bring-and-braai and pancake events on one of the weeknights out of season.

The campsites at Mac Nicol’s are divided into 9 areas: Lagoon, Fish Eagle, Private Ablutions Area, Froggy Pond, Bazley Park, Mango Valley, Stream Area, Upper Area, River View.

As you can guess from the name, this area is close to the beautiful lagoon and is a firm favourite throughout the year. This is one of the largest areas in the park, and with also being situated adjacent to the pool and lagoon area is a very social and active area in season. There is also a good mix of shady and sunny campsites.
This area also has one of the biggest ablutions in the park – including multiple showers, baths, scullery, laundry facilities and family bathrooms (shower/bath & toilet). There is also a Porta Potty disposal.

Fish Eagle
The newest area at Mac Nicol’s, developed in 2000, is a little further from the beach but has amazing views and scenery.
The Fish Eagle campsites are very open and grassy and the ones in the furthest corner of the park are bordered by both the lagoon and the tranquil Mpithi area which creates a quiet and beautiful area to camp.
For the adventure athlete, hiker or bird lover, the Bazley Trails which run through the Mpithi area are situated at the back of the Fish Eagle Area.
There are two ablutions in the Fish Eagle camping area, each equipped with toilets, showers, baths, wash basins and laundry facilities. The upper Fish Eagle ablution has a Porta Potty disposal.

Private Ablutions Area
For the more private camper, there are 8 campsites with private ablutions. These sites are situated close to our shop/bottle store as well as the main gate which leads to the stunning Bazley Beach.
Each private ablution campsite has a personal bathroom (shower, basin, toilet) and scullery.
The sites have lots of grass usually, and a mixture of sun or shade.

Froggy Pond

The campsites are usually full of grass and have a mix of sun and shade. It is also close to the pool area and trampolines, and is a great areafor kids to ride their bikes.
The Main Ablution is roughly 40m away, with all the needed facilities. The ablution is heated by a mixture of solar and gas power so there is always an abundance of hot water.

Bazley Park
The original section of the park, bought in 1983 with only 48 sites, is one of the biggest areas in Mac Nicol’s.
The campsites have both shade and sunshine and plenty of grass throughout most of the year.
It is possible for big and small groups to camp together.

Mango Valley
Mango Valley is situated near the popular entertainment hall which is a great place both for the kids and adults. These sites are always a favourite when camping with friends.
The area is made up of three adjacent sites, making it great for camping with friends. The sites are off the main park road which adds a level of privacy and are mostly surrounded by beautiful trees and plants.
The Mango Valley area is situated in between the Main and Upper ablutions so you have a range of options for both ablution and laundry needs.

Stream Area
Adjacent to the pools, this is a small area which runs parallel to the seasonal stream running through the park.
The area is great for families due to its proximity to the pool, trampolines and entertainment hall.
Campsites have an abundance of grass and shade.
For social campers the road side site is the perfect place, and for more privacy the sites behind are a great way to be close to all the facilities while still remaining very secluded.
The closest ablution block to the stream area is the Main ablution, but the Upper ablutions are also fairly close so you always have a range of options for both ablution and laundry needs.

Upper Area
This area is slightly higher than the rest of the resort, and tends to be quieter… but it can get lively when the Winter Specials are running!
The Upper area campsites are tucked away but still relatively close to the shop, beach and pools. With the layout of the sites there is always a great deal of friendly neighbour activity and socialising with the guests staying there.
All campsites are within a very short walk of the Upper ablutions (no stairs) at the end of the street. Facilities include everything from showers and baths to scullery and laundry.
There is also a Porta Potty disposal.

River View
The River View area is placed between the Lagoon area and Fish Eagle. The campsites have a mix of sun and shade, and due to the layout is great for groups and families.
The road going through the area is a dead end so there are fewer cars driving through, which makes it a great place for kids to ride their bikes.
The area is situated right above the lagoon and next to the pier, which is a good place to fish off (and a god spot for sundowners).
The Lagoon ablution is situated at the start of River View, not further than 100m from the last site.
