Kleinfontein Campsite – Clanwilliam, Western Cape

Kleinfontein Campsite – Clanwilliam, Western Cape

Kleinfontein is a scenic campsite set in the northern Cederberg Mountains at the foot of the Pakhuis Pass, about 30 km from Clanwilliam along the tarred R364. The farm is easily accessible by regular sedan vehicles, making it a convenient yet tranquil base for exploring the surrounding wilderness.

The campsite provides self-sufficient camping in a rugged mountain setting. There are a number of sites of varying sizes, suitable for tents, trailers or a combination of both. Each site has its own built-in braai, and firewood can be purchased from the farm. For larger groups or in less favourable weather, there is also an indoor braai area equipped with a zinc, table and chairs, which makes it ideal for family gatherings.

Ablution facilities are rustic but modern and well maintained, offering hot showers and flush toilets. While the campsites do not have electricity, the ablution block is fitted with solar lighting and a gas geyser. Guests should note there are no plug points.

The natural beauty of Kleinfontein is what makes it truly special. Towering sandstone rock formations dominate the landscape, and during spring the valleys burst into colour with wildflowers. Birdlife is abundant, and the area is known for sightings of the Black Eagle (Witkruis Arend). Other wildlife, including klipspringer, duiker, hyrax, aardvark and occasionally even leopard, may also be encountered.

Kleinfontein is particularly popular with climbers, offering access to notable bouldering spots such as “Sky” and “Hatchling.” Permits for climbing can be arranged via the Kliphuis Campsite office or the Clanwilliam Tourism Office. Hiking, mountain biking, cave exploration and stargazing are also favourite pastimes for visitors.

The farm’s location places it close to well-known attractions such as De Pakhuys and Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve. The area is also famous for its Rooibos tea plantations, and visitors can take a trip into Clanwilliam to visit the Rooibos factory or enjoy a meal at the popular Traveller’s Rest restaurant down the road.

Kleinfontein strikes the balance between rustic simplicity and comfort. It is a place where you can enjoy unspoilt nature, sandstone peaks, wildflowers and crystal-clear night skies while still having access to neat facilities.
