Areena Riverside Resort

East London and the Wild Coast are among South Africa’s best-kept secrets.

With arguably the best year-round climate, the region makes an ideal tourist destination. One of the top holiday spots here is Areena Riverside Resort.

The caravan sites at Areena are sheltered, well grassed and shady, with half the sites located along the 800 metres of river frontage. Electricity, braai and water facilities are available at each site. Two laundries plus sparkling ablutions make caravaning even easier. You can moor your boat at one of the jetties to enjoy easy access to the quiet beach at the mouth of the river. Activities include fishing, walking, swimming and game viewing. The clubhouse provides table tennis and pool for the teens.

With a variety of game in the adjoining private game reserve, it’s hard to resist the opportunity to follow the game viewing trail through 350 hectares of malaria-free bushveld, where you’re likely to see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, eland, ostrich and several species of deer. Really adventurous travellers will be keen to check out the Areena Adventure Village, where trained facilitators supervise a range of activities such as abseiling, quad biking, paintball and the new Ama-Zing-Zing Zipline.

If you’ve had enough of cooking over a fire or gas stove, then the resort’s restaurant will draw you in irresistibly, with its great meals at reasonable prices. The pub has a large-screen TV, so you won’t miss out on that other ‘big game’ while you enjoy your holiday. Areena Riverside Resort is an extremely well run park that offers something for everyone.
