Most of the generously-sized Areena caravan or Kwelera River camping sites are well-grassed and shady; non-grassed sites have cement slabs for a level and stable base.
With more than half of the sites spread along 800m of river frontage, there will be a site that is perfect for you.
Each site has a 15-20 amp electrical outlet for a standard three pin plug, and a braai stand with a grid.
Two laundries plus sparkling ablutions (serviced daily) make caravaning even easier.
The resort is a bird watchers paradise, with many species to be ticked off that east coast bird watching list.
The salt water tidal river is perfect for the fishing enthusiast. You can moor your boat at one of the jetties to enjoy easy access to the quiet beach at the mouth of the river.
Hire a canoe for an adventure on the river, or enjoy a relaxing river cruise on the Kareena.
Adventurous travellers will be keen to check out the Areena Adventure Village, where trained facilitators supervise a range of activities such as abseiling, quad biking, paintball and the Ama-Zing-Zing Zipline.
The clubhouse provides table tennis and pool for the teens.
With a variety of game in the adjoining private game reserve, it’s hard to resist the opportunity to follow the game viewing trail through 350 hectares of malaria-free bushveld, where you’re likely to see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, eland, ostrich and several species of deer.
If you’ve had enough of cooking over a fire or gas stove, then the resort’s restaurant will draw you in irresistibly, with its great meals at reasonable prices.
The pub has a large-screen TV, so you won’t miss out on that other ‘big game’ while you enjoy your holiday.
