A custom-made camper on the back of his bakkie is a win-win camping solution for iconic rally driver Serge Damseaux, who in his racing days also knew only one way to end a rally: as the winner.
Serge, one of South Africa’s rally icons, has won more South African championship rallies than anyone in history, driving a Toyota. He’s also an ardent camper – and he does that in a Toyota too!
After bowing out of motorsport competition in 2007 with 74 wins under his belt, Serge hit the road again, but this time it’s far more relaxed than his days in a rally car. He loves the outdoors and says he’s found a perfect mobile camper combination to take him and his wife Beverley to destinations all across southern Africa.
His new Toyota Hilux and a superbly built piggyback camper from AC Motorhomes have Serge beaming from ear to ear. But camping is not virgin territory for the ace motor racer. Eight years ago Serge asked AC Motorhomes, based in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, to turn his Land Cruiser into a unique motorhome.
The resulting Cruiser camper went on to give him and his family years of travelling and camping pleasure. But unlike the Cruiser conversion, which had the added structure as an integral part of the original station wagon, Serge’s new toy is a bolt-on unit that can be removed when it’s not needed.
Bolt-on is best
But don’t let the term ‘bolt-on’ create the impression of cheap and nasty. In fact Serge’s new camper bears testimony to the superb workmanship, attention to detail, design and build quality produced by AC Motorhomes…
