Hi, I want to confirm that the rubber snake is not a myth, on a recent trip to Manyane I saw monkeys raiding the caravan next to us, I put my rubber snake near their tent and watch as the monkeys avoided the snake but did not go into the tent or van, so I tried it at another van that was been harrased and it worked.

Jimmy they really work well to keep the apes at bay but be careful --revenge is sweet. We have had many enjoyable caravanning holidays at St. Lucia KZN where there are always plenty of vervet monkeys about. One particular afternoon we found ourselves at a loss and were a bit bored so out came the rubber snake and we decided to push their curiosity a bit. We hid the rubber snake under a yellow plastic bucket a few meters from the caravan close to the bush where a small troop were playing. From our vantage point inside the caravan we could monitor the apes through the back window undetected. Once we were out of site and inside the van the fun started. I had my doubts that these guys were afraid of rubber snakes at
all but soon they were checking out the bucket knowing that we had indeed hidden something under it. They circled it, sat and watched and one guy even went and sat on it for a while tapping the side of the bucket. Sooner or later the inevitable happened and one of the vervets pushed the bucket over and exposed our rubber snake. The speed that the group took off with was amazing and left us all laughing much better at this - our boredom was clearly a thing of the past. Rubber snakes do work!
REVENGE: Up until then we never had monkey problems around our campsites but must have been jinxed by the monkey Gods because since then we have always had hassles with these little b*^^#!s - they even broke into my van through the pop-up roof once. So now when I put a snake out I look up at the sky and ask for forgiveness first.

We are going to a resort this coming weekend that has a monkey problem. I'm definately going to try the rubber snake thing, as nothing else I've tried seems to work. Hopefully I can also confirm that it works. Watch this space! |

| Yeah it works quite well left on your front seat at shopping malls for the "other" vervet monkeys . |

Yip - it works!! Just got back from a "monkey free" weekend. I had 3 snakes that I placed at strategic points. One place I did not put one was on top of the rubbish bin. Mom and child thought they were in luck..... in the flash of an eye the lid was off!! I quickly shoo'd her away and put one on top of the bin lid.......presto........no more bin raids. |
